Distant Voices was commissioned for Galoshans Festival in collaboration with Inverclyde Heritage Hub. It is a response to images of WW1 soldiers I discovered during a research period at the Hub. Whilst looking through microfiche images of newspapers from that time, I started to discover 'death notices' These are simple black and white portraits of soldiers who had been killed during WW1. The more I looked at the images, the more they reminded me of young men I had worked with on projects in Ferguslie Park in Paisley and in Inverclyde. This raised the question for me: If there was national subscription today, would it be these young men going to war and would they be so willing as many of the young men were in WW1?
